CEO dilemma - Operational excellence or transformational leadership

The role of a CEO has been often debated as a direct contributor, leading from the front, best salesperson of the company versus an organisation builder. In the age and times of entrepreneurship where new ideas in business are the order of the day, startups becoming business behemoths is a regularity. The question however remains is what attributes are needed to be the number one in the company?

Speed of execution, action orientation, getting things done, managing situations, driving results and numbers on the board needlessly are the basics and top the chart. However, building a culture, mentoring by passing the right values, doing business with ethics and morality may sound archaic and unconventional in a high-speed zone of startups but are still the most needed requirements.

The dilemma striking the CEOs of startups, new age businesses is to judiciously caliberate and manage these two dimensions regularly. Compromising one or the other and in most cases values, ethics get compromised affect the business going forward and at times heavily. The recent news stating the resignation of the CEO by the board of a global surface transport brand puts the question of CEO looking at short term goals and managing issues to compromise ethics and values.

Speed of execution, managing situations, driving results and numbers on the board are the basics duties of a CEO. However, building a culture, mentoring by passing the right values, business with ethics are still the most needed requirements.

 

It is indeed pertinent to ensure that the CEO never goes below the radar on the matters which are operational in nature but have values, ethics and cultural aspects to avoid setting precedences. Value based judgement, courage and wider vision may be the attributes which will support this institution building overrun along with focus on execution excellence and driving numbers.
